War Story and Mr. Z completed Kentucky Derby workouts Wednesday at Churchill Downs over a track rated fast.
War Story was out very early and worked five furlong in 1:02.00 (7/20), breezing, for trainer Tom Amoss. His internal splits were 12.80, 24.60, 36.40 and 49.00, and he galloped out six furlongs in 1:15.60.
Most recently, War Story finished third in the Louisiana Derby.
Amoss commented after the workout, "He's a horse who understands the difference between practice and the real thing."
Mr. Z, who was last in the Louisiana Derby but rebounded to finish a distant third in the Arkansas Derby, was sent out by D. Wayne Lukas during the special Derby/Oaks training period starting at 8:30 ET.
He started a length back of Majestico and finished on even terms with five furlongs clocked in 1:01 (4/20). Majestico went in 1:01.20 (5/20). Mr. Z's fractions were 12.80, 25.00, 37.00 and 48.60, out six in 1:15.60.
Following the move, Lukas said, "We just wanted a maintenance work. He finished up strongly. He liked the race track. We don't want to do too much close to the race. I thought it was fine, it was OK. We don't get paid at 8:30 in the morning. He seems to have an affinity for the race track, and that's important at this time."
