In August of 2000 the police department again looked to motorcycles for traffic enforcement. As the department sought to address the issues of traffic enforcement and officer presence in the city, the police motorcycle again became a viable option. The department has two Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide motorcycles that are obtained by lease agreement and swapped out yearly for new motorcycles.
Motorcycle Officers patrol the city on a motorcycle or in a radar-equipped patrol unit; responds to calls related to traffic incidents and any other emergencies; observes, monitors and controls routine and unusual traffic conditions, assists and advises motorists and enforces traffic safety laws. The motorcycle officers' primary duties include traffic enforcement and accident investigation but are also used to supplement the patrol unit responsibilities. Motorcycle officers provide support to patrol officers by assisting with preliminary investigations and participating in other community based policing projects. The unit also works special functions such as parades, tournaments, funerals, and other events requiring traffic and crowd control.
The Motorcycle Unit has two officers that work the same schedule as a patrol detail and are under Patrol Division supervision. Both of these officers are trained in traffic related issues ranging from traffic laws to accident investigations. Motorcycle officers complete a police motorcycle-rider training course and are re-certified on the motorcycle each year. The officers ride year round unless inclimate weather dictates otherwise.
