We work with young adults to create solid foundations
for a safe and healthy life on their own,
in community with others.

MABSSCO Step North is our Minnesota Department of Corrections licensed group residential facility and is certified to provide correctional services.  This facility serves as home base for young men, ages 16-20 (average age is 18+), who have left correctional, treatment, foster care, home or other settings.  At MABSSCO, young men experience a safe, restorative, collaborative and learning environment with caring, professional staff.  We recognize and build on a young man's strengths and use research-based tools with him to assess, plan, educate and challenge him to achieve successful independence.  We work in a respectful partnership with him to identify and meet his challenges in education, employment, housing, safety and community.  We do all of this to assist a young man in solidifying his foundations for a successful interdependent community life.

Five Treatment Phases Towards Independence
Each young man participates in a variety of experiences designed to support a successful transition to life on his own by completing the following five treatment phases during the time they are with us.  Each phase is tailored to individual needs and factors such as projected discharge date, placement critical and other treatment plan goals.

1.  Road Map
Develop a Treatment Plan and begin to implement it.
►Begin developing a tested safety and support network of caring people you can count on.
►Begin hands-on independent living skills (ILS) activities including vocational assessment and employability skills training.
►Get a job and enroll in school (if part of your plan).

2.  Practice
Practice new skills and strategies.
►Learn and practice skills to achieve treatment plan goals in a structured, challenging and supportive environment.

3.  Challenge
Take on more challenging opportunities to practice skills.
►Participate in an in-program apartment living simulation.
►Develop a Transition Plan and begin to implement it.

4.  Transition
Implement the Transition Plan.
►Continue practicing and sharpening your skills as you implement the transition plan.
►Begin, or continue, visits to your community housing; use new modes of transportation; continue to test your safety and support network; meet roommates and other community experiences.

5.  Aftercare
Begin post-discharge community-based support.
►Work with the MABSSCO Aftercare Coordinator for up to six months after discharge.
►Participate in a six month follow-up evaluation and determine if additional support is needed.
