Trail Notes: April 3, 2004

The first weekend of April is always my jaunt to the Smokies to catch the first wildflowers of the season. This hike is a short, steep climb up the cove near the Chimneys Picnic Grounds. Early Spring brings a carpet of mountain beauties to this cove: Several types of Trillium, Dutchman's Breeches, Trout Lilly, Toothwort and more. This is not a major hike, in terms of length and difficulty. However, it is a major hike in terms of being a treasure trove of the small wonders to be found in the Smokies. If you have been making a day of hiking some longer trails, save just a little bit of energy and make the effort to log this small hike. It will be well worth your time.
