Chris Scarborough

Using many diverse elements such as Japanese pop culture and art history, to science fiction, Chinese propaganda posters, and real life, Chris Scarborough creates work that explores the grey areas that form when cultural and contextual boundaries erode and cross paths.

Working in photography and drawing, Scarborough’s meticulously detailed images of people who have been manipulated according to the tropes of Japanese anime is an exploration of the cultural concepts and impositions of cuteness, beauty and perfection.

In more recent work, the artist is building on this foundation to include an examination of cartoon violence, mostly through the use of anthropomorphization, the idea of giving human motivations, characteristics, or other attributes to non-human things (like weather, or nature) or, in this case, war and it’s different aspects. What once was cute now may become grotesque or vice versa. And in doing so, Scarborough is creating images that leave viewers on uneasy ground, unable to look away for risk that they might miss a detail that reveals everything, but ultimately leaving them to deal with the sensation of experiencing something familiar and yet not.

Chris Scarborough received his BFA from SCAD in Savannah, GA in 2000. Exhibiting since 2000, Scarborough has received reviews and been included in such surveys as Alarm Magazine ( Sept. 2007) ArtPapers Magazine (2006 & 2005), NY Arts Magazine (2007 & 2006), New American Paintings 2004 and 2001 (book #46, #34), among others. He has also had solo exhibitions at Gescheidle in Chicago, IL (2006), Marcia Wood Gallery in Atlanta, GA (2006), Curator's Office, Washington D.C. (2009) and has participated in group exhibitions and art fairs in NYC, Chicago, LA, Washington D.C., Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New Orleans among others.

Scarborough’s work is part of numerous private and public collections including the Tennessee State Museum, 21C Museum, and the Tullman Collection, and is a recipient of the 2008 Artist Fellowship for the state of Tennessee. Scarborough is represented by the Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, GA, Curator's Office, Washington D.C., Foley Gallery, New York, NY and TAG Gallery, Nashville, TN. He currently lives and works in Nashville, TN.
