WINTER WEATHER DRIVING TIPS

1.  Allow plenty of driving time.  Expect your trip to take double the amount of normal time it usually does.

2.  Slow down.  When roads are covered with snow and/or ice, the posted speed limit is not a safe speed.  Slick pavement means reduced road traction and possibly less control of your vehicle.

3.  Increase your distance.  Allow a large gap between you and the car in front of you.  It could take up to 10 seconds (or more) longer to stop than on dry pavement.

4.  Stop gradually.  Do not slam on your brakes when driving in snow or ice.  It creates an unsafe vehicle operation.

5.  Keep away from the snowplows and spreaders.  The City of Goodlettsville has salt and sand spreaders ready for operation when the needs arise.  While in operation, please stay at least 50 feet away from a snowplow.  This will help ensure safety for both you and the driver.  Snowplows usually drive slower than other vehicles.  Don't travel along side of the snowplow.  The snowplow could encounter a drift and cause the vehicle to move sideways.  If you're meeting a snowplow, move as far away from the centerline of the road as possible.

6.  Abandoned vehicles.  Vehicles left abandoned within public right-of-ways in such a manner which is obstructive, will be moved at the owner's expense.

Snow and Ice Removal

Each year, the City of Goodlettsville prepares for potential snow and ice storms.  The Public Works Department has the  responsibility for snow and ice removal on City streets.  Our crews work around the clock in the early stages of a snow storm and continue working to remove snow until the situation is under control.  We use sand and salt as effective as possible while keeping in mind sedimentation issues once the snow melts.

Bridges and major streets are cleaned first then secondary streets are cleared followed by through streets and then dead end roads.  Should the snow fall be heavy, we may need to concentrate on the major thoroughfare roads before returning or starting on the secondary roads.

Residents are encouraged to clear their own driveway and sidewalks, however, we ask that you do not put the snow onto the street.
