This and That
News from the Adult Ministries Department

August 31, 2011
Hymn Sing and Ice Cream Social

On Sunday evening, August 28, the Northminster Great Hall was filled with the
sounds of “old-time religion” as members sang with spirit, patted their feet, and
sometimes even clapped their hands. In fact, if the noises we made unto the Lord
had been any more joyful, we might have had a revival on our hands!

Dennis Smith did a wonderful job as our song leader, and we could not have asked
for better musicians than Steve Cook, Connie Kossen, and David Raddin.
Many thanks are also due to these three for the special music they
provided in additionto their superb job as accompanists.

Jack McDaniel and Linda Mann offered a beautiful duet; and upon a last-minute
and fervent plea, Jack McDaniel, Mart McMullan, Sr., Brock Ratcliff, and
Dennis Smith sang a rousing version of “He Lives.”

Since no event is truly Baptist if food is not involved, those who provided ice cream,
cookies, and other goodies must not be forgotten. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

A final salute is given to our Adult Ministries Committee,
without whose dedicated efforts this event would not have been possible.

A Time of Remembrance and Reflection
Sunday, September 11,2011
6:00-7:00p.m.
Sanctuary

“A Time of Remembrance and Reflection” will resemble closely the time of meditation that our church offers on New Year’s Eve. The Sanctuary will be open for prayer, devotional booklets will be available, and a minister will be on hand to offer communion.

The tenth anniversary of 9/11 marks a somber moment in our nation’s history. On such occasions spoken words can often be too much—or not enough.  In light of this fact, the Adult Ministries Committee and the pastoral staff are offering a sacred space in which silent reflection and prayer can give voice to our grief for what was lost and our hope for the healing that only God can give.

September 18 & 25
Experiencing God through Literature, Art, and
Music: Finding the Sacred in the Secular
5:30 p.m.
Adult V Classroom, Education Building

On September 18, several Northminster members will provide presentations
about why a particular piece of literature, art, or music is meaningful for their
spiritual journeys. On September 25, we’ll have a “potluck” affair,
with everyone invited to share a poem, painting, or song that is meaningful
to him or her. If you’ve ever wanted a chance to explain how the Spirit
speaks to you through the Rolling Stones, this is it!

Leviticus: Nobody’s Favorite Bible Book
5:30 p.m.

Led by Chuck Poole

Let’s be honest. Is there anyone who really likes the book of Leviticus?
Sunday
evenings in October will help us engage a book most of us tend to avoid
and
gain an appreciation for why this challenging book was included in the Bible.

Childcare is available for children ranging in age from infancy through two years of age.  Preschool and elementary children attend children's activities during the prayer service (6:00 pm). Wednesday Night “365”

As Baptists, one of our great gifts to the larger Christian community is our love for and  dedication to Bible study. Yet, how many of us have read the entire Bible? In order to fully  appreciate and carefully hear our favorite stories and passages of Scripture, it’s important to have a “broad brushstrokes” understanding of the Bible.

If you have wanted to read the entire Bible but have found the endeavor too intimidating to attempt on your own (which is completely understandable—the Bible is a big book and most of it does not qualify as “easy reading”!) then Wednesday Night “365” is for you. After the vesper service we’ll gather for an informal time of discussion and coffee as we meander our way through the Bible. We’ll be using "The Grand Sweep: 365 Days from Genesis through  Revelation" by J. Ellsworth Kalas as our guide. Copies will soon be available in the church office.  Please call Amy at 601-982-4703 if you’re interested in this study.

Special note to choir members: If you would like to be a part of the “365” study, please let me know.   I’d be more than happy to offer an additional class at a different time if there is enough interest.
