Artist Statement

I learned to paint in fields much like the ones that stretch out beyond my studio now, and walk down on hot afternoons to sit in the clear little river that runs nearby. It's not a surprise, then, to find this work planted in earth and water. No longer the pastoral scenes of my young adulthood, these landscapes are both many-layered and vastly simplified --- reduced to mass and light, and split by a single, permeable horizon where tangible and intangible briefly touch.

Using marker, charcoal, and pastel, I alternate drawing with translucent glazes and more opaque passages---allowing the developing surfaces and the response of my materials to direct the work. Often, I completely paint over nearly finished pieces and begin building again. This gives a sense of history to the paintings, even when little or none of the earlier work is visible. Blind marks and the earthy presence of charcoal help balance out the luxurious color and movement of the paint.

Within these landscapes, I explore the astonishing congruency of form that exists in the natural world.  Seeds, branches, leaves, and flowers appear and disappear from view. Layered with elements from the decorative arts and the systems of the human body, they elucidate an ancient lineage of shape and structure that links all living things in a single, pulsing current.

Ultimately this work is about connection---a visual archeology of our shared physical experience that celebrates beauty, and the profound, sustaining order of the natural world.
