 Artist Statement I fear I have no voice. I am awkward and anxious. Using art to tell stories creates a refuge for me in which to make sense of the world and a forgotten childhood. I don't remember the details of my youth, but long to tell my story. Inspired by struggle, I explore the tension between childhood and maturity, discovering the space between. I take the stories I know, stories you may also know, and record them differently-stories that examine loneliness, responsibility, and choice. At first glance the work reads like a fairytale, the playful images of children and animals seduce the viewer into the work. Closer observation strips away the innocent outward appearance and the viewer is confronted with darker stories of skepticism and failure. Combining these peculiar specific images with phrases, that often become titles, the work is layered with narrative possibility. My drawings, reminiscent of the old photographs I've collected over the years, become that space between the imagined and the observed. While the sculptural work, composed of discarded stuffed animals, suggests that uneasy feeling of lost childhood.
