Artist Statement
In 1992 I graduated from Parsons School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture. Painting, bookbinding, sculpture, photography and teaching consume my life, and I enjoy every minute of it. My vast collection of vintage objects not only inspires my work, but also becomes an important part of the finished pieces. Bringing decorative papers and found objects together keeps my hands busy, my creativity flowing, and my life festive. Instructing workshops, exhibiting my collages and participating in outdoor art festivals allows me many opportunities to express myself through my art. Collecting, creating, and sharing make it possible for me to have a creative life.
Pattern Collages
My work is inspired by vintage dress patterns from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. I began collecting these packages from estate sales and junk shops a few years after graduating from college and moving home. Fascinated by the glamorous lifestyle the illustrations evoke, I strive to capture that festive attitude in the life size pieces I create. The collages are made by adhering tissue-like dress pattern paper to canvas and surrounding it with vivid oil pastel colors. They are named after family, friends, girls in novels, and movie stars.
