W. A. Beckwith, London. Exceptionally fine 18-bore double flintlock sporting gun #522, ca.1810.  Weight 6 Lbs. Superb 32” Damascus barrels with bright bores retaining most of a lustrous old rebrown finish. Rearward sloping patent breeches with platinum touch-hole liners. Magnificent pair of locks with fancy bridles and lock plates bearing the cartouche of the lockmaker, possibly Alexander Palmer, renowned for his skill (he also worked for Joseph Manton) and one of very few allowed the privilege of signing his work. These locks are extraordinary in every regard and absolutely mechanically perfect! The whole gun beautifully engraved and finished out. The stock is very highly figured and there have been several minor repairs to the stock, dating back to the period of use. There was a stress crack through the lock area of the stock which we have repaired and the stock is at this time quite sound through that area. Overall a beautiful gun in form, function, and appearance as refinished by us for a client a number of years ago. Recently relined frizzens and mechanically perfect.
