Maura Cluthe

Talented and introspective, mixed media artist Maura Cluthe integrates text, drawing, photography, painting, and other “stuff” she has collected into her art. These collected fragments take on new meaning and live on within her paintings.

Since graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1993 with a BFA in Illustration, Maura has shown her mixed media works in the Kansas City area as well as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, St. Louis, and Atlanta.

“Quite a bit of my current work has been collaborative. There are a handful of people that I'd love to collaborate with, in one way or another. Collaborating is so fun. It pushes you in directions that you're unaware of, forces you to see things differently and think about things differently. The best thing about it for me lately has been that it's brought me back to my "roots" of collage and drawing which is something that I hadn't really done in a while. Right now I'm just having fun exploring that. It's been a long time since I've just drawn. These pieces are like little puzzles. I'm not sure what direction they're going in. They seem to figure themselves out as they progress. I put things in and sometimes take them back out. It's fun trying to figure them out.”
