Jon Langford

When not playing with one of his myriad bands (the Mekons, Waco Brothers, Skull Orchard, the Pine Valley Cosmonauts), Jon Langford often can be found in his art studio. Here, the country-music stars of yesteryear – Patsy Cline, Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, etc. – live on in the portraits Langford paints and the headstones he chisels, like the one that marks the grave of “the unknown country singer.” A native of South Wales, Langford now lives and works in Chicago.

Of his art, Jon writes, "Drawing on my own experiences as a foot soldier in the punk rock wars and an on/off love-hate relationship with America, the subjects of these paintings (country singers both real and imaginary) stare out from a backdrop of dim light, thick smoke and cold war politics. Like rabbits frozen in history's headlights, they are trapped beneath layers of nicotine and neglect. Pearl buttons still gleam as they sign their contracts and stare out of the honky-tonk shadows with glazed promo-shot grins." His multi-layered paintings take imagery from old country music publicity photos and sheet music and envelope them in a haze of ironic nostalgia.
