Bentley and Playfair, Birmingham. Exceptionally rare,  Massive 4-bore Percussion “Dangerous Game Rifle” #13, ca. 1840.  Weight: 18 1/4 Lbs. Stock Dimensions: 15" LOP.  Magnificent, true 4-bore, beautifully “Swamped”, highly figured, heavy, Damascus smoothbore barrel with bore diameter of 1.054”.
Highest quality percussion lock with tumbler incorporating a fly. Double-set triggers. Lock and all iron mounts retain a pleasing brown patina. Beautiful, highly figured, walnut stock. Heavy duty Ramrod/loading rod with ball puller screw beneath cap on hidden end.

This incredibly rare gun is an original smoothbore 4-bore intended for dangerous game and the barrel was never rifled. The lack of rifling in the barrel provided a significantly higher muzzle energy over a rifle of the same bore and powder charge making it the absolute ultimate “Stopper” at relatively close range. Also significantly less recoil than a rifled barrel!  Refurbished and re-stocked in our shop by Steve Alexander, this incredibly rare firearm is the absolute ultimate muzzle-loading gun for the African Big Game Hunter of today. We test fired it it several times at the 30 yd. range and found it to be quite accurate. Comes complete with a number of cast lead round balls and modern round-ball mould. Ready for Africa!
