Jonathan Prichard comes to us from Charlotte NC with beautiful and amazingly detailed paintings and drawings. Jon was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1980. He recently received his BFA from Winthrop University in general studio including painting and printmaking.

Color and formal shape patterns are given the same or greater importance than image. The paintings are heavily layered with a series of unsuccessful paintings below the apparent surface. Sketches are never used directly to create a painting; therefore the image must be
discovered through the act of painting. In these works, I equate identifiable subject matter with the conscious, ambiguous form with the subconscious and pure shape with the unconscious. In this way, I hope to paint the vision of a thought.

The formality lies in the permanence of the pen, the unblemished whiteness of the textured watercolor paper, and the diligent time spent creating the image. The images that surface come strictly from my imagination, without the aid of sketches.
