What residents can do to help reduce pollution in stormwater runoff.
Create a natural area on your property, dispose of wastes properly, using the minimum amount of chemicals on your yard and keeping your vehicles well-maintained can help reduce stormwater pollution. Here's a list of other things you can do:
- Report non-emergency pollution problems by calling (615) 859-2740. For emergencies, call 911.
- Never dump anything down a storm drain inlet. This flows directly into our streams.
- Keep leaves and grass clippings out of the streets.
- Wash your vehicles on your lawn or at a car wash facility. By washing them in your driveway, the detergent and sediment is going directly into our water.
- Make sure your vehicles and lawn equipment are in good shape and not dripping fluids.
- Do not fertilize prior to it raining. Use slow-release products or organic materials which are better for your lawn and the environment.
- Be conservative with pesticides and herbicides. Try using natural alternatives.
- Make sure your heat pumps and air conditioners are not leaking.
- Lawns need around an inch of water per week. Use a rain gauge to measure so you're not over-watering your lawn.
- Grow plants that are native to Tennessee. Click here to find out more!
- Properly recycle and dispose of household chemicals. In Sumner County, call (615) 452-1114 or in Davidson County, call (615) 880-1000. The City of Goodlettsville has a recycling drop-off center which is open from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday (except Thanksgiving and Christmas Days).
- Compost or recycle yard waste.
- Store pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals in a covered area.
- Clean up chemical spills immediately with an absorbent material such as kitty litter or sand.
- Follow direction on all cleaning product labels carefully.
- Use alternatives to cleaning products such as baking soda and vinegar when possible.
- Recycle leftover paint or solvent. Offer excess to someone else who could use it or use it yourself on another project. Use water-based paint as much as possible.
- Clean paint brushes in a sink.
- If you own a swimming pool, wait until the chlorine is gone before draining.
- Have your septic tank pumped regularly.
- Dispose of construction debris properly. If you live in Davidson County, call (615) 880-1000 or in Sumner County, call (615) 452-1114.
