The classic family musical gets a colorful twist in the Center for the Art’s production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown which runs August 8-24. The show, featuring seven of Murfreesboro’s best teens take on the challenging roles to bring a new generation this high energy musical.

Your favorite Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters come vibrantly to life on the stage as we chronicle a year in the life of Charlie Brown, America’s favorite blockhead. Whether enduring Lucy’s tricks or dreaming about that cute little red headed girl, Charlie’s adventures jump with excitement and life. In this production, the audience is invited to explore the pages of this six-year-old’s journal while Charlie Brown asks himself, “What is happiness, anyways?”

Taking a new twist on the show was essential said director, Jesse Cannady. “Charlie Brown is a show that every theatre across this nation has done and everyone knows and loves. With our production we are challenging our actors to bring their characters to life in modern times. So all aspects of the show have been reconsidered to fit with what we feel Charlie Brown would look like now, in 2008. With a show with such great music and characters, there is no reason not to explore the possibilities!”

The entirely youth cast was selected from a large pool of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County high school students for their accomplishments in theatre and music in Middle Tennessee. The cast includes Chip Steen as Charlie Brown, David Corlew as Schroeder, and Jason Witt as Linus, all members of the Siegel High School Chamber Choir. Sharing the part of Lucy will be Sarah Jackson (Blackman High School) and Erin McMahon (The Webb School). Rounding out the cast is Maggie Richardson (Riverdale High School) as the lovable Sally, and Kaylie Hackett (Homeschool) as the mischievous Snoopy. Dale Richardson provides musical direction and the cast is directed by Jesse Cannady (MTSU).

“This cast is the most talented I have ever been able to assemble,” Cannady continues, “From the Tennessee Shakespeare Festival to the Tennessee All State Chorus, they’ve done it all! It is a great opportunity to the community what our teens actually can do.”
