Ike Morgan's artwork has been featured and included in many major exhibits, museum and private collections across the country. Born in 1958 in Rockdale TX, Ike Morgan is diagnosed with chronic schizophrenia and has been hospitalized at the Austin State Hospital since 1977. Ike has spent the past 20+ years working incessantly on hauntingly vibrant paintings and drawings using conventional media such as pastels, inks, oil and acrylic paints on paper, cardboard, or raw canvas, and also experimenting with many unconventional combinations of these media. Ike is especially fond of painting portraits and specifically Presidential portraits modeled from dollar bills. He also relies on books from the limited hospital library, hospital staff members, and friends for additional inspiration. The isolation that the hospital provides from the outside world has allowed Ike to create uninhibited by the concerns and restraints of society with only the drive of his own pure artistic endeavors.
Ike Morgan employs a "found" palette of readily available commercial color. Morgan’s agitated surfaces of raw color -- royal blues, canary yellows and olive greens -- build portraits of kaleidoscopic presidents and mottled Mona Lisas that would make Andy Warhol blush. Wide open eyes peer menacingly from stucco faces, drawing our nervous attention. Stippled flesh, in unnatural and jarring color combinations and indefinite space, further induces paranoia and discomfort. Here, the series of portraits are presented in a grid, amplifying their cacophonous effect.
