John Twigg, London.  Exceptionally fine and rare early breech-loading, boxlock, .49 cal., flintlock turn-off, folding trigger pocket pistol, ca. 1765.  Overall length 6 ¼”.  Nicely engraved breech with Twigg’s first form of signature used during the period 1760 - 1770. Highest quality sliding safety incorporating both the cock and frizzen. The rounded butt stock with vacant silver escutcheon is very finely checkered. Additionally, this superb little gun has a roller frizzen, the purpose of which was to reduce friction providing for a faster ignition sequence. This feature was commonly used on the finest, full-size, pistols and long guns of the day, however, this treatment was almost never  lavished upon pocket pistols and is a testament to Twigg’s legendary attention to detail and quality in every firearm that bore his signature. Overall crisp, mechanically perfect, with immaculate fit and finish throughout and still retaining traces of the original finish. A superb example of this type of firearm.
