A Memorable Mother's Day
![]() A Memorable Mother's Day at the SHE Event by Jen Weir Recently my mom informed me she was downloading “I love Rock and Roll” as a ring tone. Seriously? The woman is 55. Upon hearing this, I knew the only choice for a Mother’s Day outing was a concert of some sort. Knowing Rebecca St. James was coming to Bent Tree, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Mom has been seeing her in concert since she became a Christian. We’ve always come away from her performances feeling pumped, uplifted and inspired. This was going to be great. I had no idea just how great it would be, not to mention how different. Many artists travel around the world with their “spiritual guides.” Madonna has her Kabbalah tutor, the Beatles had the Hindu Maharishi, the Beastie Boys, though Jewish, have their Tibetan monks. Rebecca St. James has Evie Karlssen, a fireball for Jesus in yellow shoes. Not a spiritual guide, but a mentor; someone to help wrestle tough questions, someone to pray with, and someone to point Rebecca to the One who has all the answers. In today’s sexually-charged culture, Rebecca also takes with her something many mainstream artists only mock - a passion for purity. A message of abstinence that even in many Christian homes is not expected or even encouraged. She inspires young women to make a commitment to purity and wait for their future husbands. She speaks out against sexual freedom and encourages freedom in Christ. The SHE event was more than we imagined it would be. Typically at a concert venue, it would be more about the artists. Even at Christian performances it can be equally about the singer and Jesus. This was different. Rebecca’s message of purity carried right on through to the whole setting. The stage set up was simple; you felt as though you were in someone’s living room worshipping. There was no focus on the musicians with her, only on the message of worshipping Christ. It seemed as though they took pains to make sure nothing detracted from Jesus. There was a time at intermission to adopt a Compassion International child, which was a complete answer to prayer for my family as we have wanted to do that for so long and never got around to it. The interaction time was also very informal and simple. Rebecca and Evie answered our questions as if they had known all 1100 of us forever. Everything about the SHE Event was about Christ: how to worship Him, how to share His love with others, and how to be more like Him in our everyday lives. We walked away from the evening inspired, but more than that, we felt as though the event ministered to our soul. It was a Mother’s Day that was truly memorable for mom and me. I thought it was a wonderful night of fun fellowship and encouragement. The concept is great. It was a great example of a girl's night out...be encouraged that you are reaching lives in a very special way....Thank you again for a very special night. It would be great to have another SHE Event in Brisbane sometime."
~Rynel, Aspley, Queensland Australia "Just thought I'd let you know how awesome the SHE concert in Brisbane was last night! I've been kind of struggling with everything and you and Evie sort of lifted my spirits about God in the music, and so did the other worshipers and the whole atmosphere of His presence there....Thanks for having that desire to bring God to others through your music. It's awesome-you're awesome!" ~Rach "I was at the SHE event last night at your concert...it was incredible. My mum and I have never seen a Christian singer be so humble before in their own concert-the whole night you made the focus about God. It was amazing. You didnt allow the attention to go to you, but you gave it all to God. I admire your Spiritual giftedness and what God has blessed you with...I just wanted to show my appreciation how encouraged i was from seeing you last night. You are also blessed to have Evie. I'll be praying for you with all the work and traveling you do." ~Ainslee, 15 Sydney, Australia "Hey Rebecca. It was great to see you in Brisbane, Mansfield on saturday night. My mum and I had a lovely time. Thankyou to you and the SHE team for ministering to so many of us girls like you did. Hope to see you back in Brisbane again hey?! All the very best in your upcoming busy tours in USA! God bless you immensely!" ~Olika "Hey Rebecca....let me just say that your music has really touched my heart. I went to SHE Event in Sydney, Australia, not knowing much of your music however once i had left, the whole experience of your show just changed my life and has brought me closer to God. I'm really thankful for this. You are a true inspiration to all us young women. Keep up your fantastic work..... God bless." ~Alex "Hey Rebecca, I saw you last night at the SHE Event in Sydney. I loved it so much- you are such an amazing singer and i really loved the words you sang and spoke. Because your of your song "Wait For Me" I went and got a Purity ring myself. I had a blast last night with my friend and my mum- thank you so much." ~Heather SHE Fall '06Tour | Sullivan, IN"...My daughter and I attended the event and had a great time. Evie and Rebecca were a delight and the music was great. As a matter of fact, I called my sister and informed her that if the tour was going to the Cincinnati area that she and her daughter had to attend. Thank you for coming to Sullivan, Indiana." "I was able to attend the SHE tour in Sullivan, IN. It far exceeded my expectations and it was Excellent. I really enjoyed all of the program. I was most impressed on your decesion to "wait for marriage." Rebecca answered a question for a young girl on how to get other young people to wait, and I think she really hit the nail on the head with the "Fairy Tale" Explaination. I can speak from experience, this is so TRUE. I met my husband Feb. 23, 2001. We were married one year to the day later. I was 25 and he was 28. We were both virgins, thanks to a good Christian home and upbringing. This was not always an easy thing to live up to, but neccessary for both of us. I was so glad I had waited, as was he. I just know God has a Great Husband out there for you all. Thanks to each of you for your strong will and grounded faith in Christ. I hope to see you again, if not here, in Heaven." SHE Fall '06 Tour | Decatur, IL"What a blessing it was to be able to meet all of you on Monday and attend the SHE event in Decatur! It was so encouraging to see firsthand your passion for God and your heart for teen girls. In an industry where it seems that the focus can often be lost, it was inspiring to see people who are so genuine and haven't lost sight of why God has called you to this place, at this time. When I was very small I used to listen to my mother's Evie vinals, and dance around the living room. Now I teach ballet, and I use Rebecca's music in my classes. It was so special for my mother and I to share an evening like this and realise how much we have in common and how much we share. You have blessed us so much through your music and your honesty. God bless you all!" SHE Fall '06 Tour | Sarasota, FL"Wow! My mom took my sister and to the SHE event in Sarasota. You all were great. Rebecca did all our favorite songs and Vicky played a couple favorite songs, too. Charmaine did really good job and Evie's songs were great. I really liked the song that Evie and Rebecca did together. I really liked how the SHE event ended with Evie, Rebecca, Vicky and Charmaine all singing "Blessed Be The Name". I liked Vicky's story about getting stuck below the stage at Night Of Joy. God shined through you all. My mom, sister and I were really blessed. God is amazing!!!!" Clara | Miami"Hi there! Last night I took my 12 year old daughter to the She event. We have never been to a concert and I can assure you I do not repent of having this be her first event outing.
We were very blessed by your refreshing and intimate show. My daughter (and her 4 siblings) are home educated and we try to be careful about what influences our home…My daughter knows Rebecca's music primarily from our local Christian station (Spirit FM) but we don't really know much about Rebecca's ministry. What a delight to see such a genuine and gracious young lady. We were equally blessed by Charmaine and Evie of course. I was refreshed by the whole spirit of the evening, open, intimate...Godly. The fact that only guitar and piano were present really helped to foster a sense of intimacy. I was equally impressed with the camaraderie between the artists and musicians. It was easy to see that they share the ministry.... Rebecca, thank you for your stand, your integrity and for openly sharing your life with others. The heart of God is evident in what you are doing. Evie...you are a beacon of God's presence and joy, thank you for being a testimony of the beauty of marriage and the privilige of motherhood (your daughter is beautiful and it was a blessing to see you sing together) Piano player and Guitar player (forgive me, I spoke with both of you and yet have forgotten your names!) You guys were cool and I hope you got to the beach!!" Hoffmantown Church | Albuquerque, NM"The Worship Center was full as we gathered to have “Girl Time” with Rebecca St. James and Evie Monday night. The evening was a wonderful blend of music and discussion of issues that face todays modern woman. Rebecca, at 28, and Evie, who just turned 50, modeled the joy that comes from mentoring friendships in Christ. Girls to grandmas were in attendance and delighted together in how much we have in common as women of God. A highlight was the Q & A time where women in the audience asked real questions and received real answers from Gods Word. Our prayer was that this not simply be an event but a catalyst for Gods Spirit to transform the lives of women. Judging from the positive feedback, God has honored our requests!"
Rachel | MSW, LLV Program“I would just like to say thank you one more time for allowing Lifeline Village residents and Staff to attend the SHE event. The girls really enjoyed all of the singers (none of them had ever heard of Rebecca St. James). They were also very moved by her ministry with Compassion.
Again, Thank You and May God continue to bless the Rebecca St. James Ministry.” Emily | Paducah, KY"Dear Rebecca,
I was at your concert in Paducah, KY a few weeks ago and I just wanted to say I am glad that God is doing such wonderful things through you! It is truly inspiring for everyone. God Help Me is now one of my favorite songs! Your songs help translate to people who are having difficult times in their life that God will provide and that through Him they can make it through. I just wanted to thank you for being such a lighthouse for Christ, leading people towards the light of Jesus!" |
