James Purdey and Sons, London. Exceptionally rare 28ga. Sidelock O/U game gun, ca. 1972. Wt. 5 lbs. Stock dimensions: 15 3/8”x 1 3/8”x 2”x 3/8” cast-off. Beautiful 28” steel barrels with full-length ventilated top rib have original 2 ¾” chambers, mint bores (.552”/.554”), choked .028”/.019”, and retain 100% original black finish. Stunning deep-relief engraved action with a total of nine flawlessly sculpted raised gold inlays by master engraver, Ken Hunt. Single trigger and ejectors. Beautifully figured straight-grip stock and forend with original,  ½” thick, leather-covered butt pad. Original Maker’s case with all original accessories including an ivory canister for cleaning patches and an ivory striker box with the original Purdey spare strikers (firing pins). This magnificent shotgun, which took over nine years to complete, was displayed by the maker as part of the "Purdey Collection"  at the Cow Palace in San Francisco during the early 1970's. A photo taken of the gun and legendary Purdey Managing Director, Harry Lawrence, accompanies the gun. Incidentally, Mr Lawrence signed the photo with a note to subsequent owner, Mort Swimmer. Overall perfectly proportioned, absolutely flawlessly finished, and in original, little used, condition, this diminutive (only 5 Lbs.) work of art is one of the rarest and most beautiful 28ga. O/U shotguns in the world.
