Women Build
e-newsletter

December 2008
Greetings!
Here at Habitat we've got the holidays on our mind...including Valentine's Day!  That's right, we are already making plans for the Women Build project which will run Valentine's Day through Mother's Day.  We hope you'll join us again in 2009!
MEET THE ALIPA FAMILY
AlipaThe Alipa Family has been selected as the partner family for the 2009 Women Build house.  Anton and Svetlana Alipa have four daughters ages 1-4, including a set of twins.  The family currently lives in a two bedroom apartment.  The apartment is well kept, but the conditions are quite overcrowded due to the family size.  The children have little room and there is no play area in the complex.

The family faces an additional challenge of caring for a daughter that is legally deaf.  She recently had surgery in attempts to grant her the ability to hear.  However, for the surgery to be successful, she must go through intensive therapy sessions multiple times a week.  It is extremely difficult to create the quiet environment required by the therapy due to the small size of the apartment.  Family and friends try to assist, but it is difficult because of the distance between their homes.  Once in Enka Hills, they will be closer to family who can help.

The family is excited to move to the Enka Hills community and they are grateful to Women Build volunteers and donors who are supporting the building of their home.
LEADERS OF THE PACK
WB logoWe are pleased to announce that Robin Clark is back on board as Construction Supervisor for the 2009 Women Build!  Diane Matheson, a supervisor in 2007 & 2008, will join Robin again for part of the build, as will Muffi Brown.  Muffi actually helped Robin out with Asheville Area Habitat's first Women Build house back in 1994. Those of you who have volunteered in the past know just how important good leadership is on this project and we could not have found better women to fill these roles!

VOLUNTEERING
Starting in mid-January, please check our website for on-line signups for volunteer workdays at the 2009 Women Build house.  Our new on-line volunteer management program - VolunteerUp - is accessible through our website and that's how you'll be able to register to help build.  We'll be offering some Saturday dates to make it more accessible for those with weekday commitments.  Please check in with us in mid-January!

DONATING
Thanks to the Stiver Family Foundation which made a generous contribution to provide a leadership grant for Women Build in 2008, 2009 and 2010, fundraising for the 2009 project is off to a healthy start.  Still, additional funds are necessary.  Donations for the 2009 Women Build House can be made on-line by clicking here.  Select "Women Build" from the pull-down menu.  Donations can also be made at the office (30 Meadow Rd.) or by calling 828.251.5702.
Thank you!
