Contract Education

Contract education is a cost-efficient way for the State to provide greater educational opportunity at a reduced expense to the State. Considering just operating costs, the cost to the State to educate one student at one of the State's medical schools is over $100,000. The same amount of State subsidy will help educate 4 Tennessee residents at Meharry Medical College or 5 students at Southern College of Optometry.

Contract education allows the State to provide access to quality education, and increase the number of professionals in high need areas such as medicine, dentistry, optometry and nursing at a low cost to taxpayers without having to develop new programs.

TICUA's November 2008 study on contract education is available on the TICUA website.
