Justify, Bolt d’Oro and Instilled Regard will put in their final workouts at Santa Anita before shipping to Kentucky on Monday.
Justify will work either Saturday or Sunday, according to trainer Bob Baffert. Mike Smith will ride Justify in the Kentucky Derby and try to get the first Derby winner unraced at age two since Apollo in 1882.
Unless plans change, Bolt d’Oro will work four furlongs at 7:45 am Saturday under his Derby jockey, Victor Espinoza, for owner/trainer Mick Ruis.
Instilled Regard was a distant fourth in a field of seven in the Santa Anita Derby, finishing well behind the one-two runners Justified and Bolt d'Oro. He'll work Sunday under Drayden Van Dyke, said Dan Ward, assistant to Jerry Hollendorfer.
“We’re excited about the Derby, Ward said. “It’s going to be a big field, not four or five, and with more pace up front, that will help him.”
At this point, a jockey hasn't been officially named for Instilled Regard, but Van Dyke rode him when he nearly wonthe CashCall Futurity at Los Alamitos last December.
