Connections Hoping for Repeat of Ellis Park Run
Flatlined worked a half-mile in 47.40 (1/41)Tuesday at Churchill Downs under Joe Rocco in preparation for Saturday’s Tourist Mile, the stakes formerly known as the More Than Ready Mile and whose purse is worth $400,000. Tourist won the More Than Ready in 2015 and went on to capture the Breeders' Cup Mile the following year.
The 5-year-old gelding, a son of Flatter, comes into the Tourist Mile off a late-running triumph in Ellis Park’s Cliff Guilliams Handicap. That ended a four-race losing streak since Flatlined captured Gulfstream Park’s Grade II Fort Lauderdale.
The Scooter Dickey-trained Flatlined last year used an Ellis Park allowance victory as a launching pad to victory in Kentucky Downs’ Old Friends Stakes. Rocco, who rode Flatlined for the first time in the Gulliams, like what he felt in the workout, which came when the track first opened at 5:30 a.m.
“He breezed really good over this dirt, so I’m really excited to ride him at Kentucky Downs in the stakes,” the jockey said. “He was impressive at Ellis. He came from very far back in the field and he put in a really strong stretch rally to pass the whole field in the last sixteenth of a mile. It was impressive, a lot of fun. Hopefully he has a similar performance.”
Rocco said it’s also special to ride the big horse in a small stable such as Dickey trains these days.
“Scooter is such a great guy,” he said. “He may not have a lot of horses, but he’s one of the old-school horsemen still here at Churchill Downs. Everyone has a lot of respect for him. I’m very proud and privileged to be able to ride his horse for him.”
Flatlined is 6-4-2 in 24 starts, earning $387,725.
