Goldencents and recent acquisition Mudflats each worked six furlongs for Doug O’Neill before Saturday’s first race at Santa Anita.
Each horse worked separately on a track rated wet-fast. Goldencents was timed in 1:10.27 under regular rider Kevin Krigger. Track clockers had his fractional times at :22.83, :45.66 and :57.80 for Goldencents.
Mudflats went in 1:14.21 with Julien Leparoux aboard. His splits were timed in :24.88, :49.31 and 1:01.78.
O'Neill said he was happier with the outcome of Goldencents' work.
“Goldencents worked like a champ,” O’Neill said. “I’m very happy. I’m trying to get Mudflats to keep his mind on business, so it’s something we’ll have to work on.”
O’Neill said long-range goals for both colts include the Grade II San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on March 9.
Before Friday’s first race, O’Neill sent out He’s Had Enough and Handsome Mike, who worked in company on Santa Anita’s wet/fast track. He’s Had Enough goes in next Saturday’s Grade II Robert B. Lewis Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 mile.
“Handsome Mike was just kind of cruising when He’s Had Enough came up alongside of him,” said Doug’s brother, Dennis. “Handsome Mike’s a good work horse, but the other one still hasn’t quite figured it out yet. Mario was really getting after him to finish up.
“Handsome Mike was just breezing.... On the gallop out, Handsome Mike was much the best,” Dennis O'Neill said.
